Merck/Schering-Plough Pharmaceuticals was formed to develop and market new prescription medicines in cholesterol management.
Merck/Schering-Plough currently offers 2 medicines for cholesterol management: VYTORIN® (ezetimibe/simvastatin) and ZETIA® (ezetimibe).
VYTORIN is the only product that both inhibits the production of cholesterol in the liver and blocks the absorption of cholesterol in the intestine. VYTORIN contains two cholesterol medicines, Zetia (ezetimibe) and Zocor (simvastatin), in a single tablet. VYTORIN has not been shown to reduce heart attacks or strokes more than Zocor alone. VYTORIN was clinically proven to lower bad cholesterol more than Lipitor or Zocor alone. You see, in addition to the cholesterol that comes from foods you eat, cholesterol is also produced naturally in your body based on your family history. VYTORIN works by inhibiting the production of cholesterol in the liver and blocking the absorption of cholesterol in the intestine. When diet and exercise aren’t enough, adding VYTORIN can help.
VYTORIN is a prescription tablet and isn’t right for everyone, including women who are nursing or pregnant or who may become pregnant, and anyone with liver problems. Unexplained muscle pain or weakness could be a sign of a rare but serious side effect and should be reported to your doctor right away.
VYTORIN may interact with other medicines or certain foods, increasing your risk of getting this serious side effect. So, tell your doctor about any other medications you are taking. Your doctor may do simple blood tests before and during treatment with VYTORIN to check for liver problems. Side effects included headache and muscle pain.

ZETIA is a different way to help fight cholesterol. ZETIA is unique in the way it helps block the absorption of cholesterol that comes from food. It works as a cholesterol absorption inhibitor that reduces the amount of dietary cholesterol absorbed from the digestive tract. It is approved for use alone or use with cholesterol-lowering medicines called statins for the treatment of high cholesterol in addition to diet and exercise. You should continue to eat right and stay active, but if that’s not enough, ask your doctor if ZETIA is right for you.
Unlike some statins, ZETIA has not been shown to prevent heart disease or heart attacks.
ZETIA is a prescription medicine and should not be taken by people who are allergic to any of its ingredients. ZETIA can be taken alone or with a statin. Statins should not be taken by women who are nursing or pregnant or who may become pregnant, or by anyone with liver problems. If you have ever had liver problems or are pregnant or nursing, your doctor will decide if ZETIA alone is right for you. Your doctor may do blood tests to check your liver before you start taking ZETIA with a statin and during treatment.
Unexplained muscle pain or weakness could be a sign of a rare but serious side effect and should be reported to your doctor right away. Patients reported few side effects while taking ZETIA, including tiredness and stomach pain.
